Sicilian winery Planeta achieved a stunning double in January's Decanter Italy Supplement. Peter McCombie MW, journalist, restaurant consultant and Italian expert, selects his 25 top Sicilian buys. Top of both white and red categories, and the only dry wines to gain the maximum 5 stars from McCombie, are Planeta's Carricante 2010 and Santa Cecilia Nero d'Avola 2007 respectively.
The Carricante is awarded 18.5/20, and McCombie describes it thus:
"Bright fruitiness, with a touch of minerality and steel. Crisp, fresh palate, revealing stone furit and medium weight. Modern expression of Carricante."
Whilst the Santa Cecilia nets a stunning 19/20, and is
"Complex, with evident ripeness; powerful but with minerality and restraint. Still relatively youthful, with firm backbone. Stylish example of modern Nero d'Avola."
