Trophies for Carmel and Ridgeview

Posted 2nd September, 2010

‘Expect the unexpected’ could have been the theme as the International Trophies were announced at the Decanter World Wine Awards dinner on 1 September. Israeli producers Carmel celebrated as their Kayoumi Single Vineyard Shiraz 2006 trumped all manner of Rhone, Barossa and South African wines to win the Red Rhone Varietal over £10 Trophy.
Decanter said of the wine, which arrives in the UK imminently, ‘by triumphing over more noted giants from around the world, this cracking wine has turned in one of the performances of this year’s or indeed any other – DWWA.’
You can see Adam Montefiore and Carmel winemaker Lior Lacser picking up the award on film (at around 3 mins) here.
Meanwhile there were whoops of celebration too when the winner of the Sparkling Wine over £10 Trophy was announced. Beating the likes of Champagnes Thienot, Charles Heidsieck and others, Ditchling’s own Ridgeview Grosvenor Estate Blanc de Blancs 2006 took the trophy for England. Decanter’s Tastings Director, Christelle Guibert, said this was an incredible home-grown success. ‘What a result,’ she said. ‘As if further proof was ever needed, this unequivocally rubberstamps England’s membership to that exclusive club of truly world class, sparkling wine producers. Up against a clutch of Champagne’s finest, Ridgeview has produced a stupendous wine that defeated them all. It’s a truly remarkable win.’
You can see owner Mike Roberts collecting his award in the same video at around 1 min 50 seconds.
Congratulations both!
