Yering Winemaker on the bushfires
Posted 21st May, 2009
Willy Lunn of Victoria winery Yering Station was in London last week. I caught up with him at the London Wine Fair to ask about the bushfires which ravaged much of the Yarra valley near to his winery, and to what extent smoke taint is a factor for his 2009 vintage.
Willy explains that despite the fact that the raging fires reached the doorstep of the winery, and several of their vineyards were either burned or smoke affected, they ’simply didn’t pick’ those vineyards. So although 09 will be down in size (and as Lunn freely admits, some grapes such as Shiraz will be ‘a challenge’), and despite the searing heat conditions which led up to the devastating fires, Yering are still very confident of producing quality wines this year.
