The Giesen Wine Estate is a family affair. The three brothers, Theo, Alex and Marcel run the winery that has grown into an export oriented business. The first Giesen vineyard was planted in Canterbury in 1981; it is still the home of the original vineyard and winery. The Estate comprises some 75 acres at Burnham, just south of Christchurch and in Marlborough there are now 600 acres in production. Giesen Wine Estate Winemaker, Andrew Blake, joined the company in November 1997. He studied Oenology at Roseworthy College, Australia and graduated in 1993 with a post-graduate Diploma. Marlborough has one of New Zealand's sunniest and driest climates. In summer and autumn warm days and cold, clear nights help keep the acid levels high in the grapes during a long ripening period. This assists in developing the crisp character intensity of Sauvignon Blanc. The Giesen vineyards in Marlborough are scattered throughout the Wairau Valley. The soils range from shallow and stony to deep sandy loams, each site bringing different characters to the fruit. Low yielding grape vines grown in a cool climate is what makes Giesen wines unique. |
