Armagnac Castarède

Armagnac Castarède
Website : www.armagnac-castarede.fr

Incredibly, 2010 marked the 700th anniversary of the first written record of Armagnac. In his “Forty Virtues”, Prior Dufour wrote of the spirit: “It makes redness disappear, and heat in the eyes, it stops tears from running, it heals hepatitis if one drinks it soberly, if one anoints the head, it removes headaches,” and so on. Actually it pretty much cured everything in 1310.

Founded in 1832, the house of Castarède is not as old as the spirit it sells, but is nevertheless the most venerable Armagnac merchant, and still in family hands.

The house style is extremely mellow because of the extra ageing in oak. The VSOP has at least ten years in barrel and the XO has 20. Complexity is taken to yet another level in the vinta ge releases, which regularly win top competition prizes. Bottling dates for the vintages are shown on the back label to give a true indication of the wood character.

Amber core with a bronze rim; shows mellow walnut, warm spices, cocoa and prunes on the nose. Mellow attack on the palate, but not cloying thanks to a delicious freshness and texture.

Deep in colour, with an amazing aroma it is powerful in the mouth with extraordinary length. The whole is dominated by concentrated fruit and round tannins.

  4. 1979 Vintage Bas Armagnac, Castarede

The 1979 has a delicate nose with hints of perfume. It has aromas of fruits like peach and prune. It is extremely long in the mouth with lots of fruit character and a hint of spice.
