The Cave de Castelmaure is one of our most exciting discoveries of recent years. In an appellation that is suffering more than practically any other in France, with vineyards being grubbed up in return for government subsidies, the Cave de Castelmaure shines out like a beacon of hope. To reach this co-operative you have to drive several kilometres down a single-track road, and when you finally arrive in the tiny village of Embres and Castelmaure (which incidentally has no shops, restaurants or even a bar) you are confronted with a modern, hugely impressive winery and tasting room. The wines made by Castelmaure are even more remarkable, thanks to the skills of Bernard Pueyo, Director and chief winemaker. “Polished”, “modern” and “balanced” are words that appeared time and again in our tasting notes during an initial visit in December 2009. Allied to this are labels that put to shame many of the the most design-conscious of European premium wine producers. To summarise, the wines from Castelmaure “tick all the boxes” and are a must for any serious wine list.
