After emigrating from Norfolk, the first William Chambers and his two sons established vineyards in Rutherglen in 1858. Another settler, a German by the name of Anton Ruche, shared his winemaking knowledge with the family and so began a heritage to pass through the generations. After overcoming incredible adversity including a Phylloxera outbreak which devastated the area during the 1890s, the third generation winemaker, Will, established an enviable reputation for the Chambers label. Drawing from soleras started by his grandfather, Rosewood’s fifth generation winemaker Bill Chambers patiently tends the wine while steadily gaining international recognition as the producers of some of the world’s finest fortified wines.
In 2004 his service to wine judging and his selfless contribution to the Australian wine industry were acknowledged when he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal. There are no slick marketing campaigns at Chambers Rosewood. They are happy to promote the simple enjoyment of wine with the same unpretentious, no-nonsense approach as ever.
