Cantine Giacomo Ascheri

Website :

Take the road north towards Barolo and, in viticultural terms at least, you’re faced with a choice: left to the sterner, more powerful expression of the Nebbiolo grape; or right towards its gentler, more perfumed and elegant face. As a winemaker, which do you choose? If you’re Matteo Ascheri, you don’t – you have vineyards in both areas. The result is a brace of Barolos that, tasted together, illustrate the disarming diversity of this beautiful part of Piemonte: Pisapola and Sorano.

If the Ascheris started commercial life as brokers, Matteo’s generation has established a deep connection with the multi-faceted vineyards of the area, supplementing their more traditional endeavours with a vineyard at Roero which yields Syrah and a Rhône-reminiscent Viognier of considerable charm.

The heart of the Ascheri operation remains, however, at Bra, where the family maintains an excellent hotel as well as one of this foodie mecca’s best restaurants, the Osteria Murivecchi. Run by Matteo’s sister, over the years it has attracted chefs of the calibre of Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver and Giorgio Locatelli to test out its unfussy, but superb blackboard menu and relaxed atmosphere.
