The story of the Henschke family and their wines has almost as many layers and facets as a great vintage of Mt Edelstone or Hill of Grace Shiraz: this is one producer for whom the descriptor ‘New World’ seems utterly inappropriate in anything but geographical terms.

It’s an inescapably involving saga, from Johann Christian Henschke’s emigration from German Silesia in 1841 in search of religious freedom, to the planting of two legendary vineyards, Hill of Grace and Mt Edelstone.

Fourth generation Cyril Henschke was a pioneer of single varietal planting at a time when Australia was awash with blends and fortifieds – but was also continuing a philosophy which began over a century ago with the planting of Mt Edelstone to 100% Shiraz.

With the fifth generation winemaker-viticulturist couple of Stephen and Prue famed the world over for their passionate pursuit of education and sustainable practices, has any aspect of the Henschke saga been left unexplored? If there has, perhaps it’s the Henschkes’ activities in the cooler climes of the Adelaide Hills, where they were among the early pioneers of the region’s renaissance in the late 1970s. These wines – with Giles Pinot Noir a stand-out – offer a new perspective on the Henschke winemaking ethos.
