Cigales is a small DO near Valladolid on the Pisuerga river, a tributary of the Duero. Felix Lezcano established the bodega in 1991, and amid his 16 hectares of vineyards at 800m altitude, he creates wines with undoubtable character. Maudes Crianza is a tribute to the Abbot Maudes, who in the 10th century produced and managed supplies of wine for Spain after the Count of Castilla (Fernan Fonzales) granted privileges to the monastery of San Pedro de Canalejas. After 12 months of Missouri oak ageing, this Tempranillo and Merlot blend displays red forest fruit and sweet spice.

Don’t be startled by the deep, raspberry-coloured Docetanidos – a claret-style rose made from blending Tempranillo with white grape Albillo. This dry, food-oriented rose is heralded as one of Spain’s best.
