The Nonino family has been involved in the production of grappa since 1897. On 1st December 1973, Benito and Giannola Nonino revolutionised the method of producing and marketing grappa by creating for the first time a single varietal grappa, the Monovitigno Nonino, distilling the pomace of the Picolit grape on its own. Great success followed both in Italy and overseas and spawned many imitators in Italy but none able to match the quality of product that Nonino offers.

More innovation followed in 1984 when in the pursuit of the finest fruit spirit – having been inspired by a trip to the Black Forest in Germany – the Nonino family produced the first whole grape distillate. Ministerial authorisation for the production of Grape Distillate (D.M. 20.10.84) was granted following a specific request by the Noninos; and the family still only uses the artisanal batch distillation stills created by Benito, which produce small batches of outstanding quality grappa and distillate a million miles away in aroma and flavour from those grappas produced by the industrial continuous method.

Other wines by this producer

  1. NV Grappa Tradizione 41%, Nonino

Typical and elegant. Before tasting, Grappa should be allowed to rest in the glass for some minutes: on exposure to oxygen the perfumes are enhanced and the nose/palate harmony is perfected.

  2. NV Grappa Monovitigno Picolit Cru 50%, Nonino

Considered “the Queen of Grappa” all over the world, for the temper, the harmony and the emotion it gives at every sip. Limpid and crystalline, it recalls to the nose the smell of
fresh honeycomb, it displays the scent of acacia flowers, ripe quince, fresh muscatel and newly picked figs. In one’s mouth it clearly confirms the nose with the addition of a taste of bread crust.

  10. NV Gioiello Castagno 37%, Nonino

Best served chilled to 10C in an iced glass with an open tulip shape. A few minutes' oxygenation by resting in the glass will open up the aromas and increase the nose/palate harmony. The spirit is intensely individual with a scent of spices and the character of the underlying chestnut blossom honey, but with increased elegance.

  11. NV Amaro Nonino 35%, Nonino
