Website : www.trinityhill.com

First set up in the late 1980s, Trinity Hill is the benchmark Hawkes Bay wine producer. John Hancock has been firmly at the winemaking helm from the beginning, along with partners Robyn and Robert Wilson who own the successful ‘The Don’ and ‘Bleeding Heart’ restaurants in the City of London. Focused purely on making the highest quality wines from Hawkes Bay and Gimblett Gravels vineyards, these wines are an excellent choice from New Zealand to grace any restaurant’s wine list. Sourced from small vineyard sites situated throughout Hawkes Bay, and including some from Gimblett Gravels in the blends, the Hawkes Bay range from Trinity Hill represents fantastic value-for-money and a great introduction to the Trinity style. The signature across this range is balanced alcohol levels, site expressive minerality and ripe fruit balancing natural acidity.

Other wines by this producer

  1. 2009 Gimblett Gravels Tempranillo, Trinity Hill

Wild raspberry and plum fruit aromas with spice and a little vanilla from oak barrels. This is an elegant wine with firm but not heavy tannin structure. The texture is silky and there is great persistence of wild fruit flavours on the finish.

  2. 2009 Homage Syrah, Trinity Hill

"A marvellously fragrant wine suggesting blackberry, licorice, anise and violets. The intense, long palate marries opulence and fineness to perfection. This just might be NZ’s most intense Syrah / Viognier. It’s a huge wine with a velvet texture and masses of ripe plum and dark berry fruit flavours that are more than a match for the wine’s solidly oaky overcoat.”
Bob Campbell, Gourmet Traveller Wine, August / September 2006

  3. 2011 Hawkes Bay Syrah, Trinity Hill

This wine combines spice and pepper with ripe blackberry fruit for a rich and soft palate with a long and complex finish.

  4. 2009 Black Label Chardonnay, Trinity Hill

The characters typical of our Gimblett Road vineyards such as pineapple, grapefruit, fig and pear are evident. Mealy, biscuity barrel ferment and integrated oak characters add complexity. The wine displays the desirable character of elegance with power. This is a powerful wine, but it also shows softness and great balance.

  5. 2010 Botrytised Viognier, Trinity Hill

The colour is a beautiful green/gold, with depth. The aromas are reminiscent of honey and crystallized apricots. The botrytis has a big effect, with hints of the floral, jasmine aspects of Viognier showing. It is very luscious and concentrated, with strong flavours of dried fruits, especially apricots. The finish is very long and despite the sweetness, finishes dry with no cloying sugar as sometimes happens with this style of wine

  6. 2011 Hawkes Bay Pinot Noir, Trinity Hill

Black fruits, such as plums, blackcurrant and cherry are evident, entwined with wet earth and smoky oak notes. These classic varietal characteristics found on the nose are reaffirmed on the palate. The firm, dry tannins give the wine excellent structure, while the degree of ripeness adds depth, complexity and a silky texture found in few wines. All of which lends itself to a delicious middle palate and long length.

  7. 2011 Hawkes Bay Chardonnay, Trinity Hill

Typical fruit characters from Hawkes Bay Chardonnay such as grapefruit and melon are supplemented by biscuity characters with a light butteriness. The wine is rich and round, with soft acidity and attractive sweet fruit.

  8. Intense, brilliant golden-yellow/green in colour with aromas of orange blossom, cumquat peel and jasmine. Full, rich and soft on the palate; the exotic and sensual nature of this wine makes it a great substitute for Chardonnay or Pinot Gris. Hard not to drink!

  9. 2012 Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Trinity Hill

Flavours and aromas of passionfruit and nectarine gently compliment the delicate aroma of gooseberries. A mineral character lends a distinctly Graves-like character to the wine. The addition of Semillon has added to the texture. The fresh acid is balanced by a tiny amount of retained sweetness.

  10. 2010 Gimblett Gravels 'The Gimblett', Trinity Hill

Black fruits such as cassis and plum. The flavours of the black fruits are complemented by a mouth-filling structure and fine-grained texture.

  11. 2011 Hawkes Bay Trinity (Syrah/Merlot/Cabernet Franc), Trinity Hill

The blackberry and black pepper nuances of Syrah, the leather and plum aromas of Merlot and the lifted red currant character of Cabernet Franc have combined to produce a complex, fruit dominated wine. The oak aging has added a further dimension to the wine without being obvious. Its richness with firm, ripe tannins make this wine extremely serious yet eminently drinkable.

  12. 2011 Gimblett Gravels Syrah, Trinity Hill

The colour is a deep, vibrant crimson. Blackberry, black pepper, savoury and spice elements are prominent. Multi-layered complexity is the aim. Powerful but ripe and round tannins give the wine great structure. Oak aging plays a minor part and the wine lives on its fruit. Combined with good acidity, mineral, earthy and tarry characters result in a wine that is distinctly Northern Rhone-like rather than resembling any thing Australian.
