Tasting Note:
To quote Micheal Broadbent: "Starbright; distinctive aroma; dry enough, perfect balance, delicious flavour and acidity. I kept a little in my glass, noting the hallmark of a really good wine; its scent blossoming".
Vinification Note:
The grapes are harvested by hand. Maceration gives a more full bodied texture. Full bunch pressing gives a cleaner juice and more fruit. A ‘birdie’ which comprises small and big grapes in the same bunch is highly sought after.
The wines are barrel fermented and spend 6 -8 months in part new Hungarian oak in Royal Tokaji's own cellars that contain their own selected strong yeasts, a strain, 060708, unique to Tokaji wines. Royal Tokaji inclines towards the larger barrel of 300 litres and use some 500 litre barrels. These sizes indicate slower aging, more fruit and less oxidisation.
In June 2009, Hugh Johnson and Ben Howkins spent several hours with Istvan Turoczi and Karoly Ats ( Royal Tokaji’s General Manager and Winemaker respectively ) tasting through barrel samples of the 2008 vintage. Different clones and different terroirs produced a fascinating insight as to how the raw materials would finally be blended into a harmonious whole that would be enjoyed the world over. Purity, balance and Tokaji terroir are the goals.
The wine then spends 12 months in bottle before release. Royal Tokaji Furmint wines do not develop in a straight line. Their life cycle mode indicates that their drinking window best starts 18 months after the harvest. They will continue to evolve happily for a further 3 – 4 years.
