Another highly recommended Iona white is the 2009 Chardonnay, fermented 70% in French oak, a judicious 20% new with some lees aging thereafter. It has a well-defined bouquet with light peach and hazelnut notes and the oak is very well integrated, allowing the fruit to express itself to the fullest. The palate is very well balanced with a touch of fatness on the entry leading to a taut middle with good acidity and lovely nutty, honeyed flavours towards the finish. This is a very fine Elgin Chardonnay, plus great value to boot. Drink now-2015.

Food Matching Note:

Wonderful with roasted white meat dishes and richer fish dishes - the refreshing acidity will cut through most creamy sauces too.

Tasting Note:

A full bodied and zesty Chardonnay filled with ripe stone fruit, fresh citrus and a subtle toasty aroma. Tha palate displays citrus, ripe fruit and a delicate minerality and creamy finish!

Vinification Note:

The cool growing conditions with the resultant minerality and wonderful natural acidity that we get in our grapes make Chardonnay an ideal variety for Iona. A limited amount is produced from 2½ ha. In order to retain the complex array of flavours form the vineyard, oak barrels are only used to complement these flavours. 50% of the wine is wild fermented in French oak of which only 20% is new wood. Careful stirring of the leese gives a rich, concentrated mouthfeel. The wine does not go through malolactic fermentation and retains the natural fruit flavour and fresh lemony acidity with a rich, creamy mouthfeel.
