In the glass it’s a burnished bronze with an alluring rim of olive – illustrating the great age of some of the parcels that have gone into this wine.
The nose is at first a cascade of walnuts toasted almonds and rancio (drying, mature complex oak character).
It then opens up to dried fruits, pears and apples with a sprinkling of cinnamon spice, further inspection gives up toffee, dried figs and burnt butter.
The palate is very lively, tingling with spice and lift – a fantastic balance of freshness and age, the sweetness kept in check by the rancio.
It’s complex, layered and focused with a silky mouthfeel and great lingering length.
The wine shows fresh raspberry and cranberry on the nose. The palate is fresh and lively, held together by a fine structure of natural acid and fine tannin balance.
The wine opens to lush aromas of fruitcake, spice and plum pudding, topped off with melted butter and brandy snaps on the side. Its a rich and heady mix, embracing and warming, just waiting for the chill of night and an open fire. The fine, low-strength brandy spirit plays a wonderful supporting role - selected for its 'tails' character, all juniper berries, spice and fruit and 'hearts' - roses and apricots and brings warmth and richness to the wine.The palate is dense and layered, the tannins chewy and mouthfilling interwoven with rich, ripe dark fruits - figs, plums, star anise, licorice, cloves and candied citrus peel. There's line and length from the acid and tannin backbone, leaving the finish long, clean and fresh. This wine will build further complexing characters as it ages and will reward extended cellaring.
Enticing liquorice and fragrant herb notes on the nose, revealing hints of dark stone fruits and cassis with layers of roasted coffee beans. The key characteristic on the palate is the textural tannins that provide support for the supple yet restrained palate - finishing with freshness, purity and length.
This shows nutty, raisin and apricot flavours, and is full and sweet enough to match well with the sweetest desserts (even chocolate!).
Pale gold in colour. Lifted perfumed aromas of lychee, Turkish delight and rose petal with tropical hints. The palate shows perfumed fruits and is sweet and spicy, richly flavoured, a nice
texture with crisp acidity and good length.
Bright crimson in colour. Sweet ripe lifted spicy aromas of cherry plum, raspberry, rhubarb and anise. Hints of spicy nutmeg, clove and mace with smoky cedar nuances. The palate is rich and full with supple layered fleshy texture and ripe sweet plum/prune flavours; concentrated and complex with layers of velvety tannins, good balance, weight and length.
Earthy tones of wild mushroom and truffles are wonderfully countered with lovely, fresh, aromatic notes of musk and flowers, raspberry and kirsch. The palate is fine and balanced, driven forward by a lively line of vibrant acid and ending with that familiar d’Arenberg fine, gritty tannin.
Black cherries and winter fruits dominate the nose - which is pure, lively and captivating. Rich and rounded on the palate, the Grenache adds blackberry tones and fresh acidity whilst the old-vine Shiraz adds structure, hints of liquorice and bright fruit.
Upon release this wine exhibits a deep appearance of vibrant black, crimson-purple mousse with a fine persistent bead that looks simply inviting.
The aroma is initially restrained but as it opens up the level of fruit richness and concentration becomes quite obvious.
The aromas are dry, dominated with a mix of liquorice and spiced plum pudding notes with a sweet seductive array of small red berries such as mulberries and raspberries.
As the wine further opens up really super concentrated red fruit characters develop such as maraschino cherry, prune juice and boysenberry.
The palate is cool, rich and dry and extremely refreshing with an abundant red fruit flavours, mixed with dried herb notes and edges of tarry tannins and mineral-like acidity.
The finish is dry but with plenty of strong red fruit flavours that linger for some time, which is just what a wine with this sort of concentration should have.
